Why Carpet Padding is Necessary?

The carpet padding you choose is just as important as the carpet itself. Choose luscious, soft carpet padding to minimize noise, maximize warmth, prioritize your family’s comfort and extend the life of your floor.

Why Carpet Padding?

Carpet padding, or cushion, is the unseen comfort that makes your carpet look and feel great. Carpet pad supports the floor by minimizing noise and maximizing warmth and can even extend the life of your carpet.

Benefits of padding:

  • Supports your carpet, helping it last longer
  • Gives your carpet a richer, thicker, softer feel
  • Brings warmth and quiet to your home by absorbing sound
  • Increases insulation, making your space more energy efficient
  • Keeps your carpet cleaner, allowing greater air flow and dirt removal during vacuuming

What to Expect – Carpet Installation

A proper, professional installation is crucial to the life and performance of your carpet. Because of this, it is important to know what to expect during your carpet installation.

Your flooring dealer will typically take care of the basics. They will send out an estimator to measure your rooms and determine how to minimize waste to maximize your carpet. They will also suggest a local professional installer who is familiar with your carpet and has the necessary experience to install it in your home. It is important to speak with the installer prior to the installation to determine exactly what they will be responsible for and to set a schedule for the work. The installation team will need to use your electricity to power their tools as well as an area to work.

Most installers will move your furniture as part of their installation; however, you will still need to move your small items like lamps, televisions or any other breakables before the installer arrives. If you have any larger items, oversized furniture or appliances you may need to arrange to have this moved by a third party, but check with your installer first, they can tell you just what to expect. Your overall goal is to move any items that could get broken while making your installer’s job as easy as possible. This will speed up the installation process.

Once the work begins, your installer will be responsible for removing and disposing of your old carpet. They will remove any moulding or trim in the room and prep the subfloor for installation. Moulding and trim can be fragile and despite their best efforts, your installation team may break a few pieces. If this happens, it is typically your responsibility to replace them. At some point, your installer may need to remove your doors to complete the installation. If the new carpet is thicker, your doors will have to be trimmed before they can be reinstalled. Most carpet installers do not perform carpentry work so it will be your responsibility to either trim them yourself or hire a professional to reinstall them.

Don’t overlook those stairs!

Underfoot-floorsSharing a recent stair flooring project (part of a whole-house we completed). For this busy house we suggested a cocoa-brown, 100%nylon Tuftex carpet by Shaw Floors. Stainmaster protected and rated for heavy traffic, it’s perfect for a high traffic stairway. Our friends at Alberto’s Decorating, paired it up with PPG Stonington painted walls and PPG’s Mountain Gray on the trim.

Decorating from the Floor Up: Common Carpet Myths Debunked

Carpet mythsCarpet offers thousands of exciting design options to enhance the look and feel of your room. It adds value to your home and provides a safe and clean environment for your family. However, recent “rumors” that carpet is an unhealthy choice for your home have led to a decline in carpet popularity. I’d like to put carpet back into your good books by exposing these common myths.

Myth #1: Asthma and allergy sufferers should not have carpet in the home.

EPA scientists concluded that carpet fibers trap and immobilize allergy-causing particulates. If allergens are in the carpet, they’re not circulating in the indoor air stream. Use a HEPA-filter vacuum to fully remove such these particles and your allergy concerns will be gone.

Myth #2: Carpet is hard to maintain – it stains and wears out very easily.

Simple steps can extend the life of your carpet and keep it looking new. Vacuum often to remove soil particles before they get below the surface of the pile. Carpet in a typical household should be thoroughly cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Professional carpet cleaners get the best results or do-it-yourself by renting a steam cleaner from the supermarket.

Myth #3: Mold grows in carpets.

FACT: Moisture, dirt and dust are needed to grow mold. Choose carpet made from synthetic fibers, keep it clean and you will have no mold—it’s that simple.

Carpet is the perfect way to update any room. You’ll also love the practical side of carpet. It doesn’t chip, scratch or crack and it looks great year after year. My clients with busy households always comment on how carpet reduces noise. They also like the savings to their energy bills (carpet insulates up to 17 times better than any other flooring).

With these carpet myths exposed, you can make your decorating choices with confidence. Making smart choices for any home improvement requires the expertise of a designer, contractor or local carpet expert. Ask them to recommend which types/styles of carpet (berber, shag, level-loop) and carpet fiber (wool, nylon or polyester) would best suit your living space, budget and family activities.

Flooring is something you use everyday. Treat your feet to luscious carpets—and love your space.
